Orquestra XXI will become the Resident Orchestra of the São Bento da Vitória Monastery in Porto, as part of a partnership with the São João National Theatre. The artistic residency will begin in October, following the monastery’s reopening after restoration work carried out under the PRR Cultura programme.
Located in the heart of Porto, the São Bento da Vitória Monastery is one of the city’s most iconic religious buildings. Having been home to the Porto National Orchestra between 1997 and 2005, its reopening reaffirms the monastery as a vibrant centre for music.
In addition to performing at the monastery throughout the season, Orquestra XXI will have dedicated rehearsal space for all its artistic and educational projects, as well as administrative offices. This partnership will enable the orchestra to strengthen its relationship with the city of Porto through community engagement and audience development initiatives carried out in collaboration with the TNSJ.
This new space for creation, rehearsal and performance reinforces both institutions’ commitment to promoting music, supporting artistic creation and developing cultural projects with the community, while establishing a new hub for musical life in the city of Porto.
